Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the series Agatha All Along.
On September 18th, 2024, Marvel’s latest series Agatha All Along premiered on Disney+ with its first two episodes. As part of phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a continuation of WandaVision, it is based on the character Agatha Harkness, who is portrayed by Kathryn Hahn. So far, the series has captivated millions of viewers with its dark humor, its intriguing mysteries, and even some catchy tunes.
Three years after her confinement in Westview and following the conclusion of WandaVision, the infamous witch Agatha Harkness breaks free from her enchantment thanks to a goth teen’s help. Stripped of her powers, Agatha teams up with “Teen” and forms a coven of outcast witches. Together, they embark on the legendary Witches’ Road, which is a magical realm that promises to give a person the thing they desire most if they survive magical trials. In this realm, the group goes through several challenges and adventures while confronting their main enemies, Salem’s Seven.
Out of all the complex characters, the most compelling character seems to be Teen, who is played by Joe Locke. From the very start of the series, many viewers have been questioning why Agatha’s juvenile companion is simply referred to as “Teen.” In the second episode, we can see that whenever Teen tries to say his real name, his mouth becomes sewn shut. Even Agatha does not know his true identity, but instead she is interested in what his intentions are.
Five episodes in, we are finally given the answer. In the third trial of the Witches’ Road, Agatha “accidentally” absorbs Alice’s powers and kills her. Enraged, Teen confronts Agatha, who is insistent that the casualty was an accident. Agatha continues to mock Teen and utters, “You’re so much like your mother.”
Teen then uses magic to mind control Lilia and Jen, forcing them to drown Agatha in a nearby mud pile, before launching them into the mud as well. The final scene shows a striking blue crown form on Teen’s head, which closely resembles a crown once worn by Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch.
From this, it is revealed that Teen is actually Billy Maximoff, a.k.a. Wiccan, the son of Wanda Maximoff and Vision. It might not have been a surprise to everyone, however. Early on, Marvel fans have already presumed Teen to be Billy due to many clues hinting at the reveal. Journey Mou (11), for instance, states that “Before watching the show, I watched theory videos so I sort of spoiled myself for the reveal. Overall, I thought it was pretty well done and made the story more intriguing.”
We first got a glimpse of his character in WandaVision, where Wanda gave birth to twins Tommy and Billy Maximoff in her magically-created world. Tommy, being able to move at superhuman speed, inherited powers from his uncle Pietro while Billy took after Wanda with magical abilities. At their age of thirteen, Wanda lifted the hex on Westview, which meant that the twins vanished along with it. Three years later, we meet Billy again in Agatha All Along. A popular theory is that Billy’s secret intention for traveling the Witches’ Road is to resurrect his mother, Wanda, who allegedly died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
In the Marvel comics, Billy Kaplan took on the superhero alias of Wiccan. He and Tommy Shepherd are the living reincarnations of the Scarlet Witch’s sons, Billy and Tommy Maximoff. The twins are revealed to have been created by the villain Mephisto’s energy before he reabsorbed them back into himself. However, Wanda’s magic helped the two break free from Mephisto and be reincarnated into different families.
So, how does this play a part in the future of the MCU? It’s clear that Marvel is continuing to set up the introduction of the Young Avengers, a new generation of young superheroes. As a member of the Young Avengers, Billy wields powerful magical powers, including blasting energy and manipulating reality. The MCU has also already introduced some of Billy’s Young Avenger teammates, including Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, America Chavez, Cassie Lang, Kid Loki, Riri Williams, and Eli Bradley.
The double-episode finale of Agatha All Along is set to air on October 30th. The series is streaming now on Disney+.
