Facebook: Making Payments
April 14, 2015
Money at your fingertips in a click of a….chat room? A spokesperson for Facebook unveiled that in the upcoming months, Facebook users will be able to send each other money via Facebook’s Messenger app for mobile devices and in the chat feature for desktops; the company claims that the money sent will reach your bank in one to three days. Unfortunately, only users over 18 will be able to send payments over Messenger and Chat.
Here’s how it’ll work.
To send money:
1. Start a message with a friend
2. Tap the $ icon and enter the amount you want to send
3. Tap Pay in the top right and add your debit card to send money
To receive money:
1. Open the conversation from your friend
2. Tap Add Card in the message and add your debit card to accept money for the first time
As cool as this new feature sounds, Robin Jang(12) is concerned about the whole notion: “Sending money over the internet has always sounded really odd to me, like a scam. I would rather just make transactions in person. It seems safer.” Facebook, however, anticipated hesitation and has released a statement: “We use layers of software and hardware protection that meet the highest industry standards. These payment systems are kept in a secured environment that is separate from other parts of the Facebook network and that receive additional monitoring and control. A team of anti-fraud specialists monitor for suspicious purchase activity to help keep all accounts safe.” In fact, Facebook has previously allowed payments on its site to purchase games and gift cards, and there have been no severe problems due to their secure systems that encrypt the connection between users and Facebook, as well as stored card information.
Granted, this technological advancement seems to be risky and intimidating, but what do you think, Mustangs? Facebook cash—yay or nay?
