Kaila sharing one of her many passions and talents at a song competition.

Most students who know Kaila Melanson(10) remember her as a member of the varsity song team. When asked about being on varsity song, Kaila, also varsity co-captain, replied, ” I love song because it’s a sister hood, we are all a close family.” She is undoubtedly talented in dance, as she has been dancing since the age of three. Kaila shares her love of dance with young dancers by teaching at her mom’s studio stage 1 and volunteering weekly at Bryant Ranch elementary school where she helps coach the spirit squad.

Furthermore, Kaila is the Miss California junior teen for the year 2015, her second year holding this title which she also won in 2011. After winning the Miss California Junior Teen competition, Kaila went on to nationals where she competed against all 50 winners from each state and received first runner up. Her title enables her to work closely to promote the platform of the magazine BYOU meaning, be your own self. If Kaila could transmit anything it would be the ability of loving yourself and empowering yourself, and others. In the pageant world, Kaila has been successful in acquiring multiple titles such as, Miss Newport Beach and Miss California junior high.

Yet, Kaila also translates her mustang pride through her position in ASB as the commissioner of spirit. As spirit commissioner, Kaila organizes multiple games coordinated to our dance themes. Kaila is also in charge of picking pride items that will be used in sporting events such as rally towels, and mustang pride brackets, as well as developing activities such as the stomp on the Aztecs bubble rap activity in preparation for the battle of the boulevard football game.

Kaila is most inspired by Jennifer Lawrence, especially when she answered during an interview, “I will never starve myself for a part I don’t want little girls saying “Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner.'” In addition Kaila admires Lawrence because she isn’t afraid to be herself.

At YLHS Kaila is also a part of the theatre department. Outside of school, Kaila is currently a part of JRP, an acting school, looking to prepare rising stars. In the future Kaila can see herself as an actress in movies, and attending the University of Oregon.  Her professional background includes several commercials for both Disney Channel and Nickelodeon.

A great representation of Kaila, her favorite quote is “Everything is good in the end, and if it isn’t good, it isn’t the end,” because it is hopeful and positive.
