MTV Movie Awards
April 10, 2016
On April 9th, 2016 Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart hosted the 2016 MTV Movie Awards in Burbank, CA in the backlots of the Warner Brothers Studio. Although the show was recorded on Saturday, the awards were aired the following day. Many movies were nominated including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Dead Pool or The Avengers: Age of Ultron. A number of celebrities were also found at the awards, including Samuel L. Jackson, Daisy Ridley, Chris Evans, Zac Efron and Eddie Redmayne.
Though the rain was a struggle during set up and before the show, thankfully there was no rain to be seen during the awards. Lauren Bui (9) “loves watching the MTV Movie Awards and says that if any celebrity won, [she’d] want Miles Teller to win, because of his role in Allegiant. [She] was stoked that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had won best picture film and [Lauren] says that the movie previews of Suicide Squad and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them really made [her] exited to watch both the movies.”
During the award show, there were performances by Ariana Grande and Halsey singing their new songs in order to promote them. Ariana Grande sang “Dangerous Woman” and wore a long pink gown, with a partnered pianist, while Halsey wore a white outfit and sang on the back stage as fake snow drifted throughout the air and amongst the fake cities within the backstage. The award for the best kiss was given to Adam DeVine and Rebel Wilson, where they reenacted the kiss on stage making the audience feel uncomfortable and the world watching on live television. Adam Driver won best villain in the new Star Wars, and Will Smith won the biggest award of the night, the generation award, where MTV played a video montage including clips from all his past movies.
There were many memorable speeches including Charlize Theron’s for best female performance, and Daisy Ridley’s for best breakout actress. Caitlyn Jacob (12) says that she “has never seen any of the Star Wars’ but heard that the new one was award winning. If [she] could choose the performances, [she] would’ve chose The Weeknd because his songs are really catchy and relatable. In addition to [her] desire for The Weeknd to perform, [she] wishes Deadpool would’ve won rather than Star Wars: The Force Awakens, because [she] thought Ryan Reynolds was hilarious in the movie and has great talent for an actor.”
