HOW TO SURVIVE: Your Permit Test
January 14, 2016
You’ve gone through driver’s ed. You’ve taken all those little quizzes after each section, made your appointment at the DMV, and are so ready to get on with that next step of becoming a real driver. You’re probably even thinking about what car you’ll drive once you get your license…
…but first, you have to pass your permit test. Survive it. Slay it, hopefully.
With these tips, you will.
PREPARE. Even though you may think you can just wing it, it’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. Preparation for the permit test is simple:
- Get apps. This was probably one of the most helpful things for me. The people who create the apps take questions that are often used on the DMV permit tests, and just doing the questions over and over again helps immensely. Just search “California DMV permit test” in the navigation bar of the App Store or Google Play Store, and several should pop up.
- Study the DMV handbook. Several people I know have used this method. Obtaining the handbook is simple as well; simply Google “California DMV driving handbook” or get one at the DMV itself.
- Take online tests. Google is one of the best resources you could ever use. Online tests are available, and although sometimes they’re harder than the permit test actually is, they condition the test-takers well.
- YouTube all the questions. Maria Paula Loc (11) advises test-takers to “watch lots of videos on YouTube. Past test-takers always post their corrected tests and the questions are exactly like the ones you’ll be asked to answer!”
- DON’T SWEAT IT. It’s literally just another test, and an easy one at that.
Everyone who actively seeks a driving license will eventually receive it.
- BE PREPARED TO WAIT.
- The DMV stinks. Don’t expect to be treated like kings or queens. When I took my permit test, it was my first time going to the DMV, and even though I knew it wouldn’t be my last, I sincerely hope to never go there more than I have to. Most people are grumpy, and it’s slow.
- You have to go to several windows before you take the actual test. You’ll have to take a number and go through several windows, including one where you have to take a vision test.
- HAVE FUN.
- Just kidding.
But seriously, once you take (and pass) your permit test, all you have to do is wait six months and practice driving before you are eligible to take your driving test. It’s both exciting and terrifying at the same time.
But once you get your permit, make sure that you practice driving enough so that you’re completely comfortable on the road. Or else you might fail your driving test the first time around (just like I did).
But don’t stress about that now!
