“Fuller House”
May 14, 2015
On August 20, 2015, Netflix officially ordered a thirteen episode season of “Fuller House.” Fuller House is a reboot of the original hit series Full House, which aired on ABC Network from September 22, 1987 to May 23, 1995. The sitcom lasted for eight seasons before the network cancelled the show due to the increasing costs of production and the dwindling audience.
Full House gained new viewers in the years following the original airing of the series finale through syndicated reruns of the show. Full House continues to be popular amongst popular culture today and still airs daily on several channels. The show depicted the everyday lives of an unconventional family setting. After Danny Tanner’s wife was killed in a car accident, his three daughters were left in his care. He enlisted his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis and his friend Joey Gladstone to help him raise the three young girls. The rest of the series follows how the three men adapt to the changes in their lives due to the taking on of the traditional female roles. There were few additions to the family over the seasons but the basis of the episodes stayed the same.
Circulation of the rumor of a spin-off spread like wild-fire throughout the internet in August of last year. The rumor was not confirmed until late April when John Stamos confirmed the show. John Stamos is said to be producing the show as well as occasionally guest starring. Jodie Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure will be reprising their roles as sisters Stephanie Tanner and D.J. Tanner, and Andrea Barber as D.J.’s best friend Kimmy Gibler. The rest of the original cast members are yet to be confirmed, but several have publicly commented that they would love to guest star.
Jodie Sweetin stated in an interview, “To say I’m excited, I don’t think is quite an adequate term for it. I’m getting to do something and have an opportunity to be a part of something I hold incredibly dear to me, with people that are my family that I’ve known since I was 5 years old. To be able to go back and do this as an adult and really bring the Stephanie character back to life and who she is as an adult, who wouldn’t be excited to be able to do that?”
The series is set to follow the lives of grown up D.J. and Stephanie Tanner and their longtime friend Kimmy Gibler. D.J. Tanner-Fuller all grown up is a recently widowed veterinarian living in San Francisco. She is the mother of two and pregnant with a third child. Her sister Stephanie, an aspiring musician and her best friend Kimmy, as well as Kimmy’s teenage daughter move in with her to help support her. The premise of the new series shows parallels from the original with DJ being recently widowed and left to care for three children just like her father. Although the shows are quite similar, the roles are reversed, with three women taking care of the children.
The new show isn’t just meant for longtime fans but is also to bring in a wider ranging audience and is set to be released sometime in 2016 on Netfilx. Fans of the original Full House have mixed feelings about this sequel. Some are ecstatic while the others aren’t so thrilled. Ragen Gage (11) stated, “I’m excited to see all of my favorite characters make a comeback! I was really happy when i read about it on twitter.”
