The ban of TikTok in the United States would severely impact the influencers of the platform in various life changing ways, for most, making content on the platform is a career that keeps food on the table and them off the streets.
First off, the repercussions would would be fairly significant, for many, TikTok has become a primary source of income, with the revenue they make off of brand deals, sponsored content, affiliates, and not to mention TikTok shop where they sell their products, the ban of the platform would result in a substantial drop in income, forcing influencers to seek alternate sources of income. A lot of TikTokers use the shop to sell and promote their product, and the loss of this feature would cause the inability to properly sell their product out to new customers, this could possibly even cause the product to not sell at all and have to be discontinued.
They would likely have to move over to different platforms to continue making their content, though with different platforms comes different consumers, who may not like the content produced by the creators. Which could lead to low views and therefore low income. not to mention the fact that platforms such as Instagram Reels and Youtube shorts have completely different ways of creating and editing content. A person who has been affected by the ban is Megan Wang (11), “As a user of TikTok, I’ve seen the detrimental effects this ban has had on its users.”
Moreover, ban would also severely impact the creative style of many content creators, for example other short form video platforms such as Instagram Reels and Youtube Shorts only allow for 90 and 60 second videos respectively, while TikTok allows for up to 10 minute video lengths, not only that but they would also have to adhere to the different guidelines of each platform. However, some creators already post their videos on multiple platforms, those influencers may not be as affected by the ban due to already built followings and familiarity with the platforms.
Furthermore, the loss of TikTok would change the influencer-brand relationship. Brands rely on the creators to advertise their product to younger demographics and a ban would disrupt these advertisements, which would cause brands to find different ways to advertise to the youth and other demographics.
Finally, the banning of TikTok would cause the people who watch these videos to shift over to other platforms, this would likely not work out so well as each respective platform has a certain demographic of people who watch the content, as most would most probably not enjoy the content on the platforms.
