Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a comedy about a detective department in a Brooklyn police station. The show mainly follows Detective Jake Peralta and Detective Amy Santiago. While It’s not a new show,it has been gaining traction recently and people have given it a watch;I’m here to see if it’s worth watching. Within this article, I’m going to go in depth on the pilot episode of the show and list some of the moments I personally found funny, or heartwarming, etc.
The episode starts in an electronics store where Peralta and Santiago try to solve a robbery.Santiago remains serious while Peralta jokes around and makes references to other shows, before revealing a nanny cam that had caught the robbers. This shows us that while he doesn’t take his job very serious, he is in fact good at it.
Cut to inside a meeting room where Santiago tally’s another point for Peralta to the amusement of others, this get’s explained later. Anyways, they discuss the murder of Henry Morgenthau, and it’s told that they will be getting a new captain in the station. It then cuts to Charles Boyle, the precincts workhorse, discussing how to impress his love interest with Gina Linetti, the Civilian Administrator. She tells him to take her to see an old movie which he decides to do.
Meanwhile Jake reminisces of their old captain who let them do whatever they wanted, mocking the new captain who comedically appears behind him. Captain Ray Holt promptly shuts Jake up and makes sure he knows he is in charge and will not be messed with. In his office he talks with Lieutenant Terry who was terrified of everything once he had kids, I’d be too. Anyways he goes over all the members of the Detective firm, this acts as a kind of introduction to all the characters.
Later, at the crime scene of the aforementioned Morgenthau murder they discuss the new captain and that a really expensive ham was stolen.Holt goes to the scene punishing Jake by giving him door duty, and then Boyle asks out Rosa Diaz, one of the many awkward yet funny interactions by the duo.
At the precinct Gina is called into Holt’s office to discuss the tally markers, which were actually a bet. The bet was iff Amy gets more arrests she gets Jake’s nice mustang; however,if Jake wins, Amy has to go on a date with him. Later during Jake and Amy’s door duty they don’t have much luck asking the neighbors.
After a scolding from the captain, Boyle and Jake head to a place nearby the scene that may or may not be selling the stolen ham. They interrogate the man behind the counter and eventually pursue one of the employee’s Ratko after he attempts and succeeds to flee. And once again Holt punishes Jake once again for his refusal to listen.
Rosa interrogates Boyle on what movie they’re seeing where he messes up and the date is canceled, while Jake finds the clues to where Ratko was going to be next; with Holt commends him for his great work.
The climax arrives when Holt, Jake, and Amy wait in a squad car for Ratko where it’s revealed Holt is actually gay.Rosa reimburses Boyle for the movie tickets and they sort of reconcile, but the quality time they spend together is cut short when they find Ratko where they pursue and catch him where Jake and Holt set aside their differences ending the episode.
Saying the pilot was great would be an understatement, I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entirety of this episode, I laughed several times and enjoyed the interactions between the members of the 99th precinct. And the resolution was just perfect, after several times where Jake refused to take Holt seriously he finally understands what it means to be a part of the team. Anyhow I think Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a great show and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested, as supported by Linkin Chaffin (10) “I think that it is very enjoyable.”
