When to decorate for Christmas? This is a big dilemma that finds controversy all over. As much as the smell of Christmas scented candles is tempting, giving its own respected time to Thanksgiving is also important. Some argue that before Thanksgiving is too early but others are eager to turn their Christmas lights on the day after Halloween. Whenever one chooses to do this is based on personal preference, but here are some facts that might influence you in the future to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate.
When nearing the end of the year, Christmas is all everyone thinks about. What isn’t there to love? The cookies, the music, and the movies are all so merry and bright! Still, Thanksgiving also deserves its own hype and special time. It is also a time where families spend time together, indulge in traditional Thanksgiving meals, and take a break from school to come together. Family is already together so decorating and continuing old traditions under one roof is perfect while everyone is still home. This special time is a perfect time to build forever lasting memories with your loved ones.
Furthermore, decorating the first week of December starts the perfect countdown for Christmas. Before, Halloween and fall decorations are up, which serve purpose up until Thanksgiving. After that, the pumpkins are replaced with nutcrackers and the orange and brown tones are replaced with red green and white. For these reasons, it is the perfect time to make the transition in between the two holidays. When asking my friend Mckenzi Reiter (11) why her family waits to decorate until after Thanksgiving she said,
“Honestly, before Thanksgiving there isn’t enough time and I would rather wait until after when my whole family is together”.
This too is another valid reason to wait, sometimes there is just too much to do during the holiday season. Giving Christmas its own time away and after Thanksgiving makes it seem even more special. Otherwise, the Christmas cheer might start losing its spark and start to feel repetitive. I know that when this happens to me I sadly start to get less excited for Christmas because it feels as if it is already passing. For obvious reasons, waiting a couple weeks to decorate is the way to go.
Whether you choose to take my advice or not, is up to you, but keep in mind what you have read. Christmas time is a special time that shouldn’t be taken for granted and should be given its own time to shine. Imagine not feeling the Christmas spirit to the fullest, no one wants that. Regardless of what you did this year, consider next year waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorate and make those priceless memories with those you love.
