Din Tai Fung is a well-known Taiwanese restaurant started by a married couple. Originally, Din Tai Fung was a cooking oil retail shop in Taiwan by Bing-Yi Yang and his wife Pen-Mei Lai. In 1972, they dedicated half of their shop to making Xiao Long Bao. Slowly, they realized that their food was far more successful than their oil shop, so they committed Din Tai Fung to be a very successful restaurant as it is today. Around the world, there are 165+ locations and 13 countries with Din Tai Fung locations (Din Tai Fung). Today, Din Tai Fung’s menu is filled with delicious noodles, soups, dumplings, wontons, their famous Xiao Long Bao, and many more items. Now, the real question is, what is the hype on Din Tai Fung?
Din Tai Fung fills their meals and each item on the menu with various flavors and spices, making it very appealing to customers. Each day a Din Tai Fung restaurant will produce roughly 10,000 dumplings a day on average. The restaurant’s focus is perfection and uniformity, so it takes some chefs about six months to get the practice down. Din Tai Fung requires chefs to make each dumpling in specific ways, including folding it 18 times, with each dumpling weighing 21 grams (Los Angeles Times). A well-trained chef is expected to fold 8 dumplings in 1 minute. Din Tai Fung holds their employees to high quality, perfection, and customer service standards. With amazing food and service, it is impossible for people not to return. This multi-million dollar company truly strikes the mouth with amazing flavor. The food is insanely delicious.
Now, although people go to Din Tai Fung because of their amazing food, TikTok and other social media platforms play a large role in the restaurant’s popularity. TikTok is an expansive marketing program, without many realizing it. TikTok creators promote many products and restaurants. Influencers with large audiences influence followers to go out and try new things. Social media sparks a feeling of not wanting to “miss out,” driving many to purchase different things. In this case, tons of influencers and other content creators post a lot about Din Tai Fung and their reviews, which sparks interest in people to try the restaurant. This gains the restaurants more popularity and customers (BBC).
Bella Puskar (11) expresses, “I have never even tried Din Tai Fung, but I see so many TikToks on my For You Page that make me want to try it so bad. It looks so good, and influencers make it sound even better.” That said, it is evident that TikTok influencers increase the restaurant’s views worldwide.
