On June 2nd,  the Summer-Sendoff took place at YLHS. It’s meant as a farewell party for seniors leaving toward college. It’s more like a school dance with free admission. With food trucks, games and a dj it was a fun light hearted time to spend. “The Sendoff was one of the most fun and exciting events from this school year! I enjoyed target throwing, connect four, and delicious food. Though this may be my last year here, I’m happy that I was able to go,” comments Danielle Grimes (12) on the event.

Music does so much for dances, even for your mood in general. The day took off with a range of classic nostalgic songs from “take on me” to Katy Perry. The DJ danced to himself the entire time to keep spirits high. It gave the Sendoff a more friendly and summer like feel. The background music was loud but not the type of bass loud you could feel- it was neat. Past the music the DJ hosted a few games like Finish the Song and Red Light Green Light. Seeing a group of friends face each other off with a competitive spirit was wholesome to watch. Overall the DJ lightened the mood.

Summer-Sendoff is free, which took me by full surprise when I figured a whole food truck was going to be there! This could probably top the snacks you’ll find at most dances. The food truck offered 2 choices of burgers along with two choices of fries, regular or with chili along with a serving of soda. I thought I’d choose chili for both and it did not disappoint. I honestly think this was the whole highlight, paired with the summer like feel of friends, music, and sun that first bite of chili-cheese fries was everything. There was also a taco guy that students could choose to eat from. With an assortment of tacos and sides, it was a tough decision to decide where to eat. The dance had Italian ice and ice cream to offer as well. I didn’t get the chance to try it but I’d imagine it a refreshing sweet contrast to the sun.

Games were also at play. “Axe throwing”, connect four, jenga, basketball, ping pong, and beanbag. Though the “axe throwing” wasn’t really axe throwing, it was fun as a safe alternative. The basketball was more arcade-like in its own section. Ping pong, connect four, and beanbag were pretty popular as classics. Jenga was my favorite- Going back and forth with silly comments and a competitive spirit made the event!

The Send Off was an overall sweet time to let loose and ease yourself for a feel of summer. The music and atmosphere felt safe enough to bring a baby. The invitees were adorable, including Dr. Dinh’s baby, and even Mrs. Chen’s dog. It really lightened my smile. Friendly with the fun of each other, it was a wholesome and easy going time.
