Finding your Sense of Style
June 2, 2023
Everyone has their own unique set of styles. But it isn’t all that easy finding a style that really suits you. When finding a style, there’s a few things you could keep in mind, including color, what’s matching, statement pieces, and weather.
There’s a lot to really pick from. For anyone trying to figure it out, Pinterest is a helpful website to inspire and branch you out. A few popular keywords to search include alternative, dark academia, light academia, cottagecore, fairycore, 90’s and 80’s. Once you have a general gist, create a board with your favorites. From there, pinterest recommends you similar styled outfits. Think of what speaks to you, what do you recognize? It’ll come to you! There’s a lot to choose from so have fun!
Color is one of the most important aspects in fashion, dressing in your favorite colors gives yourself a clearer expression. Color usually reflects different emotions. Bright warm colors usually tell of a more extraverted character while cooler more saturated colors tell of a more introverted character. Black and white are classic base colors while different shades of jean blues have always been quite popular. Recently gray tones and earthy tones are more common. But despite this…
Match! Without really overdoing it. A base color with a similar shade works. Jeans usually work with any color beside a similar shade of blue. Since black and white are base colors, it’s usually the same idea, though try to find a close enough shade. If you need help figuring out color schemes searching online may help.
When dressing, having a statement piece gives a cute ode to your character. A patterned skirt, a unique patterned top or bottom, it could even be as simple as a graphic tee. Then there’s Accessories! Jewelry, hats, belts, hair trinkets, there’s a wide variety to choose from. These are all quite fun. You’ll start off with a vague idea but with more thought it becomes easier to navigate. “Have fun with fashion but know your limits, it’s a reflection of yourself but don’t take it too seriously!” says Matthew Smith (11).
You don’t always have to follow the trend. Having a style eases you into having a better gist of the person you’d like to become. With everything in mind it really comes down to you, sit down and give it some thought. What do you value? Maybe it’s comfort, making a statement, keeping it discreet, a note to your passions. Whatever it is, as long as the mirror finds a sense of comfort you’re on the right track!
