While college majors may not be the first thing on many students’ minds, it’s inevitable that for the majority, it’s likely the culmination of their hard work, money, and education. Many students feel the pressure of choosing the right major as Emma Wang (10) expresses, “I think about my future profession almost daily; I want to be able to pursue my interests without regretting it.” While pursuing a passion is ideal, many majors only leave room for a couple of job opportunities. Taking that into account, what majors are the most universal and provide the most job opportunities?
- Business Management
Majoring in business management means learning the ropes of supervising a business and all its different parts. This requires skills in problem-solving, communication, decision-making, and most of all, leadership (UCC). Besides providing the skills to manage a business, these skills are all universal skills that can apply to jobs in any field. Not to mention that the number of jobs available for students taking this major is practically endless, every business needs management. With 371,500 projected job openings in 2023, this major provides for helpful assets to other jobs and a wide arrange of employment options.
- Computer Science
To earn a computer science degree, students are taught to be well-versed in a variety of fields that can include software development, database administration, and cybersecurity (coursera). Besides the already great 145,000 projected job openings, by earning a degree in computer science, students give themselves job opportunities in several fields (UCC). As the use of AI and technology only continues to grow in the modern world, so does the number of jobs available in these countless fields. Alongside every field, everywhere in the world uses technology, so, majoring in computer science opens the door to working in several departments and parts of the world.
- Engineering
Engineering majors will find themselves equipped with skills in a broad variety of subjects. Besides taking courses specifically in math, science, and technology, studying mechanics, physics, and chemistry also helps during this major (BigFuture). While rigorous in the sense that the degree requires studying a broad range of topics, this also means that students finish their education with extra skills helpful in other fields of work. Majoring in engineering allows students to acquire analytical skills, communication, strategic planning, and design (idp). All of these skills are assets that bring appeal as a possible employee.
- Psychology
Psychology is the study of human behavior and the science behind it. By taking psychology as a major, students take courses that equip them with critical thinking, scientific and deductive approaches to thinking, and an easier time understanding others (UKY). While learning psychology has many general advantages in the workplace, its main advantage lies in the fact that it covers many fields of work. Psychologists are often employed as counselors or in any job interacting with other people. As a result of their understanding of the human mind, people with a degree in psychology qualify for many areas of work because they can address and solve problems purely from their ability to understand a person’s needs or crises.
- Finance
Majoring in finance means studying the management of money and how to manage it into a blooming profit. By taking this major, students learn to analyze data, strategize their investments, and choose with caution if they take risks (BAU). Besides being very general and broad skills, by learning finance when these students enter adulthood, they can understand how to manage their money on their own. Every company requires financing and budgeting, providing a large amount of job opportunities as well.
On the other hand, countless jobs don’t take majors into consideration. This allows freedom in choosing a major that is both a passion or perhaps, a lighter load. Contrary to popular belief, most of these jobs have the potential to bring in a good amount of money as well. Among these jobs, the most lucrative are positions in management and software development. Since both are positions that may not need experience in the specific field alongside being required for any business, the job opportunities provided by these positions are quite great.
Overall, while colleges and degrees may be on top of many students’ minds, there are many options for them to pursue that can still give several career options in the future.
