Have you ever watched Saturday Night Live or Whose Line is it Anyway and wondered where you could watch affordable local comedy shows? Well you’re in luck! Here at YLHS there is an epic comedy show that only costs $5! Yorba Linda High School ComedySportz is a family-friendly, student-run, competitive, improv team that performs once a month on select Fridays! There are even some themed shows where the audience can participate in dressing up or bringing props the players will use in games.

But it’s not just theatre kids who are a part of the team. Students from all grades and backgrounds come together every Friday to play games, learn improv, and laugh their hearts out. Ava Mobraten (12), who’s been on the team since her freshman year, says that being in YLHS ComedySportz: HSL helped her confidence dramatically. She goes on to say, “From the moment I joined, I knew there was no going back.” She was right. Ava is now one of the managers of the team alongside Addyson Shoup (12). 

The organization “ComedySportz” has been around since 1984 and has teams that compete globally. The Los Angeles Comedy Sportz Team started the High School League and has taught improv to over 70 schools in California (CSz LA). The website goes on to say that, “It encourages [the student’s] individuality and provides the forum to succeed or fail in a safe environment that combines showmanship and sportsmanship. The League provides an extracurricular activity that goes beyond stage work into everyday situations. And the students just think they’re having fun!” Whether you’re playing games, performing on stage, or simply watching the show YLHS ComedySportz provides a heartwarming show anyone will enjoy (CSz LA). 

“I wish more people came to watch!” Ava adds, “We have hotdogs. We can bribe you.” That’s right, not only can the audience prompt the players, but they can fulfill their needs with a variety of concessions they could find at regular sports games! We sell chips, sodas, candy, popcorn, and of course hotdogs.

Join in on the fun December 13th where YLHS students go head to head with Claremont Highschool’s improv team! It’ll be a night full of laughs and if you wear an ugly sweater you’ll get $1 off entry. Middle schoolers can bring their student IDs to watch to show for free! There will also be a hot chocolate booth, and follow the team’s Instagram @ylhscomedysportz.hsl for updates!
