The East Coast and West Coast are often seen as having two different approaches to life. Each coast has its own reputation, which shapes the experiences, viewpoints, and goals of its people.
With its famous cities like New York, Boston, and Washington D.C., the East Coast tends to be hasty, on-the-go, and rooted in the arts. People here are often viewed as determined, with a strong sense of urgency, and may sometimes even be considered rude. Whether it is the hustle to be the best on Wall Street or the battle of academics between Ivy Leagues, the East Coast is all about aiming for success and constantly staying ahead in the game. On this coast of the country, the lifestyle is a continuous “go-go-go,” as people are constantly hurrying from place to place, to catch a subway or complete their to-do lists. New York City, dubbed “the city that never sleeps”, is a well-known location for its aspects of music, performance, and fashion. New York draws people from all over the world to experience the famous Broadway shows firsthand, as well as performances from its talented orchestras and ballets. This city’s events include the iconic New York Fashion Week which takes place twice a year. During this event, designers, models, and even fashion majors showcase their latest trends and collections. The East Coast has its fast-paced and ambitious lifestyle that is the center of tradition, culture, and constant hustle, and can almost be epitomized by New York City.
Meanwhile, the West Coast which is home to cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle, gives a contrasting vibe. Here, life tends to be more laid-back and open-minded, where people are hardly in a rush. The never-ending traffic tests patience; however, is a reminder that the city moves at its own pace and in its own direction. The West Coast is known for being the essence of entrepreneurship and unique careers Hollywood is widely recognized as the heart of the entertainment world, as the magic of film and picture is brought to life. People walk through Hollywood neighborhoods, getting a glimpse of movie stars’ homes while stepping foot onto famous filming spots that have shaped the film industry and pop culture. Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest—home to Seattle—is known for shaping the coffee culture that has since gone worldwide. Starbucks, founded in this city, forever changed the way people enjoy their daily coffee. Here on the West Coast, people are often more relaxed about the journey, focusing on things like work-life balance and finding passions. Success here is still important but is often seen less as a race to the top and more as finding meaningful and personal fulfillment in doing so.
Student, Chelsey Natividad (11), adds: “Visiting New York, I could feel the rush in the air, as everyone was always in a hurry or on the move. Here at home, the pace completely shifts and there is time to enjoy life.”
Whether it’s the fast-paced energy of the East Coast or the more decompressed vibe on the West Coast, both sides offer separate lifestyles that reflect the traditions of their people. The hustled streets of New York and the relaxed beaches of California show that there is no right approach to life and achieving success.
