Hailey Bieber is facing a lot of controversy lately surrounding her so-called “obsession” with and “jealousy” of Selena Gomez. It started ever since Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s official break up in 2018.The couple started going “on-and-off” when speculations of Justin cheating on her started. Later in 2018,  Justin proposed to Hailey and the ongoing drama started. 

Later, in January of 2023, Selena Gomez posted a video on TikTok joking about her overdoing her brow lamination. That same day, Kylie Jenner posted a picture on her Instagram Story of both Hailey and her on a FaceTime call showing their eyebrows up close. People started to speculate that they were trying to make fun of Selena. Since then, there has been an uprising of support primarily for Selena Gomez on TikTok.  

Hailey Bieber then posted a TikTok in which she used the sound “ I am not saying she deserved it, but God’s timing is always right,”and many people believe it was posted as a means to body-shame Selena Gomez. She has since taken the video down.  

In late February, Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber both denied accusations of making fun of Gomez, for Jenner considers it a “reach.” Gomez also responds to rumors, stating it is “unnecessary” and that she is a supporter of Kylie Jenner. 

There is a TikTok resurfacing a video showing Bieber making a face of disgust when a man on a TV show complimented Taylor Swift’s album by comparing it to a rap from a rap battle. He said “One-on-one rap battle, full of the meanest lyrics about a celebrity since Taylor Swift’s last album” to Hailey. When he mentioned Taylor Swift’s song, she stuck her finger in her mouth and pretended to gag. Since Selena and Taylor are best friends, Gomez was quick to defend her, commenting “So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game” on the TikTok. She later deleted the comment, but many believe this has further pushed conflict between Bieber and Gomez. 

On February 23, Selena Gomez announced that she was leaving social media, noting “I’m 30, I’m too old for this” on TikTok Live. 

On February 28, Hailey Bieber posted an Instagram Story with Rema’s song “Calm Down.” She posted to the version of the song that did not include Selena, which fans also took as a way of deriding Gomez. 

Since the new drama has started, most have taken the side of Selena Gomez and believe “Hailey Bieber is jealous and obsessed with Selena Gomez,” (Savannah Cheng 9th) while Gomez continues to show kindness and empathy for everyone, further gaining support.
