As stated by Lorelai Gilmore in Gilmore girls. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have flakes. Flakes have been sighted, flackage if you will has begun…I smell snow,” was the feeling of many students and staff at Yorba Linda High on a not so typical lunch.

“Snow, its snow!” expressed the students of Yorba Linda High as they ran quickly into the quad to catch a glimpse of the delicate snowflakes trickling down. Students recall that on Wednesday at lunch out of nowhere thunder suddenly arose. Lightning quickly followed and soon rain came crashing down from all directions. The school soon filled with chaos and excitement after the recent weather. “We went through 4 seasons all in 40 minutes” (Aiyanna Reed 9). In the midst of panic and chaos, the rain suddenly became less violent. Students then noticed small snow pellets sprinkle down. “I was inside finishing up a discussion with my 4th period class when I heard students screaming outdoors. I kept checking the window because it looked chaotic, then saw the ground covered in white. We immediately ran to feel the snow …it was a fantastic once in a lifetime experience” (Anjeli Webb 11).

Similar to rainbows after a violent rain, snow brought joy and excitement to the campus. As some students had never experienced snow, and many were surprised by the recent turn of events. “I was so happy I haven’t seen snow in the longest time, so I was really stoked. It was a little surprising since it doesn’t really snow in the part of California where we are. Also, I was so happy to worry about it too much” (Ace Chandler 9).

Pictures quickly flooded social media of kids enjoying the moment all around campus, by trying to catch snow in their hand, holding out their tongue, and catching little specks of snow on their clothing. “I also saw people trying to catch snow on their hoodies…it was really cool since it was once in a lifetime” (Hannah Chong 9). From the pictures uploaded, it was a definite moment of bliss as kids ran out from classrooms, teachers stopped to peer outside the windows, and “everything just stopped for a moment” (Aiyanna Reed 9).

Many were shocked and surprised by how there were looming clouds that were dark gray and full of rain looming only over Yorba Linda High School, while surrounding areas were visibly covered with more sunshine. “It was crazy, the snow yesterday was very unexpected, and I was very surprised and it’s weird because my house didn’t get snow…I walked into 5th period, and it was completely sunny and dry” (Sophie Herrmann 9).

According to the OC register this is the first time in 24 years since it has snowed in Yorba Linda. But it’s also the first time Yorba Linda High School has received snow. “I thought it was snowing and then the students ran in and said, “Mrs. Salas, it’s snowing,” so I’m like “oh my god okay, so I wasn’t wrong” and then I went back out and took videos and pictures. I’ll never forget this day” (Mrs. Salas). This day is a day to remember and will most likely be talked about as a bittersweet memory as Yorba Linda’s first snow.
