Olajide Olayinka Williams, commonly known as KSI, is an American social media influencer, boxer, and music artist. He has recently released a new song, “Thick of It,” on October 3rd, and it has gone viral on social media by many haters. With all the bashing and trolling of fans, repeated jokes and memes have been constantly made on how KSI’s new song is ‘the worst song ever.’ Even other celebrities have joined in on the fun, such as Drake, a Canadian rapper with over 75 million listeners, and YouTuber Adin Ross, with over 4 million subscribers. “Thick of It” even made it on “This week’s most hated thing on the internet” on Complex. But are the hated comments necessary, and is “Thick of It” really ‘the worst song ever’?
Fans are one-sided when it comes to this question. With solid evidence, both opinions are debatable. Strictly speaking, “Thick of It” is not ‘the worst song ever,’ but people are saying that the music is off-key and the lyrics are random, which bothers them. However, the melody is only partially why the song annoys other users. Many fans repeat that the music video style is annoying and that the way the video is filmed irritates them. Although all of these are just biased opinions, many other users have agreed and jumped in on the hating. With all of these reasons combined, more and more people choose to share their opinions through social media. Even though many professional musicians and singers have received bashful hate in the past, theirs’ is almost nothing like KSI’s “Thick of It.”
For teenagers in this generation, it has almost become popular to hate. “Thick of It” should not deserve the dislike it has received so far. Many conversations at Yorba Linda High School even hold topics about KSI and his new song. Addison Kopiczko (10) agrees, “I don’t know why KSI’s song is getting so much hate. Although his lyrics aren’t the best, it has a catchy beat to it and I don’t think it is that bad. I even added it to my playlist.” Many other students at YLHS feel the same way, since at the end of the day “Thick of It” is just another song in a world of billions. Now with it almost being over three weeks since the song was released, fans continue to post the same jokes and memes repeatedly. It should not be normalized or validated to hate a song to the point where an internet trend is started in disliking it.
Even though there have been tons of hate for KSI’s new release, all the good and bad attention has technically promoted his song. The more comments, posts, and talks that “Thick of It” is given, the more listeners and attention KSI receives. However, in the end, internet “trends” come and go, and people should not waste their time hating on artists, even if the song may be questionable to certain listeners.
