In 2007, a new streaming service was launched, letting people watch TV shows and movies on any internet-connected device. In 2024, with almost 300 million paid subscribers worldwide, Netflix has become one of the most popular video platforms.

Although everybody watches different kinds of entertainment, according to Netflix, the most-watched TV shows and movies of all time are Wednesday, Stranger Things, Red Notice, and Bridgerton. Peyton Rodriguez (10) remarks, “I would recommend watching Netflix to others because it’s a great way to wind down. My favorite show is Young Sheldon because I like to watch it to relax after a long day or week.” This statement sparks the question: “What are high school student’s favorite TV shows or movies?”

After doing a mini-survey based on the students at Yorba Linda High School, I found that there was a wide collection of data. I asked equal amounts of students from each grade about their favorite movie or show, and concluded that a TV show, called “Gilmore Girls,” was a popular favorite for girls. However, Gilmore Girls is considered a fall show, meaning the season might be the reason most answers were the same. But unlike the girls, there was more of a variation in answers with the guys. “Outer Banks” was the most popular answer for their favorite show or movie.

The top three movies and shows that are currently popular, according to Netflix are Outerbanks: Season 4, Nobody Wants This: Season 1, and Monsters The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. All three entertainments have made over 8 million views and over 60 million hours viewed.

As we dive into October, tons of new shows and movies will be released on Netflix, including new seasons of Outer Banks, Heartstoppers, and Jurassic World. Another teens’ favorite, “Gossip Girls,” will be returning to Netflix at the end of October. Also, there will be Halloween movies added to Netflix soon, including Scream, A Quiet Place Part 2, and Despicable Me 4.

Netflix is the most successful video company because of its easy accessibility and wide range of age-appropriate content. You can watch shows and movies with your friends or family at any time with just a click of a few buttons. Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Slovakia… wherever you go, Netflix is a common global streaming service. With so many shows and movies being added to Netflix this fall, don’t forget to watch at least one of the new or old releases with your family or friends.
