Did you know that the average American lives eight fewer years than people in Japan or in Switzerland? This fact is not a coincidence, but a rising concern that every American should worry about. Insights from Dr. Casey Means talk, mention health care issues in The United States. She spoke about several interesting yet alarming facts about how lightly the U.S government takes the healthcare of its citizens. Fortunately, there is still time to reverse the negative effects by gaining knowledge on the subject about personal well being, and by demanding attention on this topic from the government.
Ultimately, the problem is in the little attention the country has on food laws. The government ignores what goes into foods and medication simply by not enforcing or even creating strong food policies. The food that Americans eat leads straight to chronic illnesses. Infertility, obesity, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, dementia, cancer, fatigue, autism, and infant maternal mortality are just a couple of the many diseases that come with the toxic food. These diseases are linked with chronic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. I assume all these confusing words are unsettling, and they are meant to be. Annually, 1 in 6 Americans suffer from foodborne illnesses. To put that in perspective, it is as if 3 people in your classroom were diagnosed with deadly diseases.
When talking about this topic with fellow Mustang, Mckcenzie Reiter (11), advice she gives is, “People should always wash their fruits and vegetables because of all the chemicals farmers put on their foods.”
More specifically, reasons to which these foods become dangerous are because of how processed they are, the heavy metals that end up in them, and the toxic chemicals inputted into our food. Dr. Casey states that,
“1 billion pounds of synthetic pesticides are being sprayed on our food every year, 99.99% of the farmland in the U.S is sprayed with synthetic pesticides.”
As frightening and unreal this sounds, it is the sad truth of the United States. The question is, what is our government really doing to stop thus? The answer is nothing. All of the food laws our country claims to set are not enforced and are not enough to stop this epidemic.
All in all, the naked truth about the way the United States of America handles food safety can no longer be ignored. The lack of policies and simply use of natural ingredients and food is impacting the future of the world. Percentages of diseases in the U.S rise every year, along with the toxic pesticides used in our foods. Citizens need to demand regulations and advocate for change, because there is still time to reverse the damage and pave a bright future for Americans.
