There are countless clubs on our YLHS campus that bring bright ideas and diversity to our community, and one of those clubs is CALL Club. CALL Club stands for “Creating A Lifelong Leader,” which is exactly what the club is about. Their mission is to develop leaders within our YLHS campus through community service events, informational meetings, and their year end leadership training at Disneyland. Leadership is always an important characteristic to possess, especially at a young age. Through their positive engagement and philanthropy, their events reflect their values and stress the importance of passionate leadership in our community.
Founder Katie Ikemoto (Alumni) had the intention of making a positive impact on the community through not only her club, but through the people that learned valuable lessons and skills from it. During these meetings and events, the value of stepping up as a trustworthy leader is emphasized immensely especially as a young teen. Proud board member Kelsey Ikemoto (11) states, “People should join CALL Club because it’s a club that allows for everyone to grow their leadership skills and be active in the community by doing services!”
Some community service events that take place through CALL Club are projects such as beach clean ups, letters for the elderly, and coloring pages for children in hospitals. One service event that has stuck out to past members is the Food for Families canned food drive. Members not only donate canned goods for those in need, but also help the shelter organize, sort out outdated goods, and load them up for those that need it. Four-year member and now Co-President Chloe Chang (12) states, “It is very rewarding to see all our hard work go to those that need it the most.” Not only do these events help students fulfill their community service requirements, but they also learn valuable life skills that will benefit them in the future.
At the end of the year, after the club members have worked hard to fundraise for their program, the group goes to Disneyland for a leadership workshop called “Imagination Campus.” During this program, students learn to examine the learnings and challenges that many current leaders have and how to overcome them effectively, like a leader. They will also be introduced to Disney’s 5 Keys of Excellence: Safety, Courtesy, Efficiency, Show, and Inclusion, and even develop their own keys along the way. Along with the 5 Keys of Excellence, they’ll learn creative problem solving and the importance of developing partnerships with other leaders and individuals in their life. Disney’s mission through this program is to create future leaders who share common passion for knowledge, global vision, and innovation.
So, if you are interested in helping out our community and attending a rewarding leadership conference at the end of the year, then CALL Club is the perfect place for you!
