The rise of social media has significantly impacted fashion trends, as they emerge and fade day by day. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest have shaped the style guide of certain groups, mainly to the teenage eye. Influencers and everyday users showcase their new, popular trends, ranging from clothes to accessories, and even beauty products. The constant flow of new content within these social media continuously removes what may have been trending only a month ago. All of these facets in place allow for a wide variation of aesthetics and styles as anyone with a form of social media can participate. One simple hashtag or mention can bring undisclosed items into the spotlight within hours.
As the current fashion trends flow in and out of style, several themes have emerged over the summer, most popular amongst the teenagers of TikTok. Low-rise jeans, Adidas shoes, leopard print, pops of colors, and UGGs are some of the few items that have swarmed the internet as the new staples. Low-rise jeans have made a noticeable comeback, usually paired with a cropped shirt on a warm day or an oversized sweatshirt or hoodie on a cold day.
UGG slippers, Birkenstocks, and Adidas are also making a striking comeback from the late 80’s and 90’s. The classic Samba and Gazelle style Adidas are now spotted almost anywhere, along with the Birkenstock clogs and sandals. Animal prints, especially leopard and cheetah, have been manufactured in almost any item possible, ranging from printed pants, shirts, dresses, swimwear, and scarves, to even hats and belts.
Styles including Y2K, old money, coquette, and streetwear are all trendy aesthetics within the 2024 fashion landscape. Y2K delivers a colorful and accessory-filled vibe, while old money leans into a timeless style that combines neutrality and luxury. The coquette aesthetic revolves around a feminine look full of bows, soft colors, and laces, while streetwear owns the baggy and graphic look. The broad environment of fashion is endless and constantly evolving, offering a variety of ways one can express themselves.
TikTok star Demetra Dias has widely grown in popularity, her outfit ideas swirling across TikTok’s “For You Page.” Throughout her videos she shares her daily outfits, listing every item and their brand. Demetra has become a major influence on teenage girls, with her outfits adapting to seasonal styles. Her signature look revolves around low-rise jeans, Adidas Campus sneakers, and colorful strapless tops. Emma Guastaferro (11) adds that “Demetra’s style has influenced mine and several of my friends’ outfit looks. She has created a new sense of fashion amongst many people at YLHS.”
This diverse, widespread fashion showcases how much of an impact social media has on new trends, continuously inspiring the new generation. The power of online platforms allows for a fast flow of new ideas, influencing personal expression through a sense of fashion.
