Sports are an essential part of Yorba Linda High School’s community. Among the countless sports, women’s tennis approaches its end with the final weeks of the league before the season ends. Yorba Linda High School tennis is proudly a part of the highest league, the Crestview League, alongside other schools such as Cypress, Crean Lutheran, Foothill, and Canyon High School. The days before league games are spent preparing through matches with schools outside of the Crestview League, notably other schools in the Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District.
The women’s junior varsity team has had two losses but there has also been one clean, 18-0, sweep to make up for it. Coach Johnson coaches these players, more often addressed as Coach Tony, who ensures they have the best tennis experience and improve their skills. A sophomore who has been on the team for two years, Emilie Hsiao (10), remarks, “I think my experience as a JV player is amazing and fun. I met a lot of fun girls on the team that made me who I am today. It’s also exciting to improve the way I play tennis throughout the year by having such a talented coach. I knew that as soon as league started it was going to be tough but I know the JV team can handle it. I personally think that if everyone does their best and has fun, we definitely have a chance of winning.” It is without a doubt that Yorba Linda High School’s junior varsity tennis team is filled with many students who are happy to play for their school.
As for the women’s varsity team, there has been only one loss so far with an impressive ten victories a week into the league. Coach Doan is the varsity team’s new coach, and although he is brand new, he has bonded with the team greatly. Yafu Yu (11), a junior who has just joined varsity expresses, “After joining the tennis program in freshman year, my passion for this sport has grown tremendously. Being promoted to the varsity team my junior year, matches have definitely become more challenging. Nevertheless, my team and I try our hardest to enjoy the little happy moments during stressful matches. Currently, the varsity team has an overwhelming winning record and is undefeated in league. I hope our team can keep up with this trend and get through the rest of the matches with no defeats. In the end, I firmly believe that both the junior varsity and varsity teams will achieve incredible records in the 2024 tennis season.” Having trained hard for their position on the team, these varsity players are indescribably dedicated to their sport and incredibly talented.
Overall, the two women’s tennis teams are filled with immensely hard-working and committed students who have been competing hard for their games both during and outside of the league. Despite the end of the season steadily approaching, there is no doubt that the team will play even harder to achieve the title of the league champions.
