In a world where many have felt like outsiders, the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at Yorba Linda High School stands as a beacon of hope. It provides a safe space for those who seek acceptance and unity and is a community that fosters understanding and advocates for inclusion and equality. In the GSA, everyone has a seat at the table.
In today’s age, with the decline of ‘wokeness,’ there has been a noticeable drop in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) departments after the peak in 2021. Moreover, a rise in opposing trans students from playing in sports teams of their chosen gender rather than their biological one has been prevalent, from 53% in 2022 to 61% in 2024. This rise operates on the belief that corporations should not speak out on racial issues or LGBTQ+ rights (Economist). With these societal shifts, the GSA will act as a shield where students can find the courage to express themselves and challenge these norms.
Amid these oppositions, it is incredible that this club even started. The leaders of GSA knew the risks of starting a club providing a space for anyone who wishes to express themselves without fear of mistreatment. It is a powerful statement for LGBTQ+ youth that they still have a community. The GSA president Angelo Messina (12) started the club because “[he] wanted to promote a more inclusive environment within the school.” His idea has blossomed into a club that unites students, helps everyone find their community, and inspires hope for a more inclusive future.
The GSA Network spans the United States and connects LGBTQ+ students and allies with the rest of campus. Founded on equality and unity, GSA chapters have historically provided support and a safe space for students to express themselves openly. At Yorba Linda High School, these individuals hope to foster a culture where students feel seen and heard regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
This new community on campus will work to unite and educate anyone willing to listen about the hardships that the LGBTQ+ community faces. They will address these adversities by bringing students together to foster love and a sense of belonging. Further, they look to educate the students about queer history, culture, and traditions with lessons, music, pop culture, arts and crafts, guest speakers, and much more in meetings to promote tolerance and open-mindedness on campus.
In times of hostile public opinion, the GSA will work to provide support for LGBTQ+ youth, giving them a community, a voice, and undoubting acceptance. This club will offer students a sense of belonging–whether they are learning something new or finding friendship, the Gay-Straight Alliance at Yorba Linda High School has the potential to unite the student body and create a more inclusive environment. Together, GSA members will pave the way for a more inclusive and accepting campus.
