To play or not to play: That is the question. In a world of pawns and kings, every decision can lead to victory or defeat. The stakes are high, and the excitement is palpable. Welcome to the YLHS Chess Club!
The new school year is slowly setting in and so is the chess club. Club officers have been busy planning future tournaments and new ideas for fun activities. It’s back for the first time since 2021 and is more exciting than ever.
Dedicated to supporting new players, the club officers have crafted unique learning days to help members master chess principles. They aim to create an inviting environment where everyone can enhance their skills, regardless of experience.
Many students have shown early interest in the club. Aiza Sheik (10) was particularly excited to join, expressing, “I never learned how to play chess but I always wanted to. Thus, the chess club seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn!”
Besides the social aspect of joining a club, many benefits to chess push you to use your brain capacity. According to the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, “Over many decades, researchers have studied how learning chess can positively impact education. From improvement in reading and math scores to critical and creative thinking assessments, as well as helping with special needs, chess has been proven as an effective pedagogical tool for students of all ages and abilities” (NSCF).
Club members use Chess.com, a platform that can be used to challenge other players and watch lessons that teach valuable tips. The website also provides entertaining variations of the game. Bughouse Chess is amongst the most popular versions on the website. To play the game, “You team up with another player to take on another pair of opponents” (Chess.com).
In addition to online and in-person tournaments and puzzles, club officers will offer candy to incentivize new players and host “free” days on the last Friday of every month. These free days create a social and friendly environment for all. Members can sign up to bring snacks and enjoy an afternoon of challenging their friends to a variety of board games, not just chess.
Chess Club’s secretary, Lauren Kim (10), shares her enthusiasm for the club: “I am most excited about meeting new people who have the same interest as me. And as your secretary, I will assist anyone who needs help!”
As the Chess Club gears up for an exciting year ahead, it invites all students to step on board and join aspiring strategists. Whether someone is a seasoned player or a curious beginner, there is a place for everyone. Chess Club fosters stronger bonds in the Chess Community and at YLHS. The goal is to strengthen the mind and have fun doing it.
