It is no secret who the zodiac killer is. Ranging from the crimes he commited decades ago, frightening the citizens of San Francisco, to movies and documentaries being made about him, the story of the zodiac killer is known by many. But who is the face behind the name? We might have just found out.

Starting way back in the late 1960s, the zodiac killer was committing crimes, most of them being murders, in the streets of San Francisco. Between the months of December 1968 to October 1969, the zodiac had five discovered murders, although he claims to have murdered a total of 37 people, some which may have happened outside of Southern California. Although not all these cases are confirmed, there are many cold cases that the zodiac has been traced to.

The Zodiac Killer was most known for toying with the police as he committed these crimes. He would write taunting letters and cards which he then mailed to local newspapers, threatening to commit more crimes if his writings were not published. He would write ciphers about his murders, saying that he was collecting people for the afterlife. Some of his ciphers took over 50 years to crack, while others have not even been identified yet. Around 1974, the zodiac killer ceased his communication with the public, and his identity has never been discovered since.

However, this might not be the case anymore. A team of 40 cold case researchers known as The Case Breakers claim they have identified the man known as the zodiac killer through dissecting new physical and forensic evidence from witnesses. They Case Breakers say that the man they believe to be the criminal died in 2018. Multiple news sources have tried to reach out to the family members of the accused man, but none have been successful at doing so.

Before you get too excited, it is important to note that the San Francisco Police Department confirmed to CNN that the cause is still an open investigation and the FBI has made no comments on the claims made by The Case Breakers. There also is some suspicion to the group making the claims as they are also linking the Zodiac Killer to deaths that have been confirmed to not have been done by him.

Hopefully it will be identified soon if the claims made by the Ice Breakers are accurate or not, and if they are accurate, it will go down as one of the most historic discoveries of all time!
