The Future After High School?

High school is a time where you grow and learn more about yourself. Take your time and really get to know what your interests are.

The goal for most students in high school is to go to college. Many teenagers dream of success at a young age, but, why does the path to success have to be planned out before those teenagers leave high school?  For instance, when you apply to a college, you have to have a basic understanding and idea of what major you plan on going into. Now, the question is, how can you be expected to do that when most of your life has been planned out for you? During high school, you are told what classes to take and what classes not to take. Then, once a student in high school evolves into a student in college, they are no longer advised which classes to take and which classes not to take. It is entirely up to the student to decide what classes to take, based on their major.

Many teenagers do not know what they want to do with their weekends, let alone plan out their entire lives. This is why classes, such as the careers class offered at Yorba Linda, are so important. Without them, many students would not have even a slim understanding of what certain career paths have to offer. “It is very stressful having to plan out your future career path because your interests may change and the future may be different,” Delaney Renau (10).

From joining the military, going to a two-year junior college, going to a four-year university, or getting an internship, the options are endless. More traditionally, high school students attend a two year college then transfer to a four year university or go straight to  a four year university. However, there are other options, such as attending trade programs, going straight to work, or even taking a gap year before committing to any schools or jobs.

It is crucial for teens to start thinking ahead and planning on having a slight picture of their futures. By learning how to become more independent, teenagers are preparing themselves and setting themselves up for a world where they are completely on their own.

Numerous of career paths can lead to a happy and successful future. It is important to keep in mind your interests, what draws you in, and what interests you. Your future should be something that you look forward to and enjoy. Life is always changing and so are you, and that is absolutely acceptable.
