The first presidential debate ended on September 10th, 2024, with pop star Taylor Swift causing further commotion with her announcement: “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.” The pop star’s support for Harris gained more than 9 million likes on Instagram and a 400% voter registration increase, according to CBS News. Voter trends are constantly changing with unpredictable destinations, but does Swift have the power to change its course?
Swift has always had a lasting impression on many of her fans, and there is no doubt about that. She has a loyal fanbase of people who call themselves “Swifties.” These “Swifties” from all over the U.S. came together to support Harris. Seeing that Swift publicly supported Biden in 2020, “Swifties” sprung into action. A group of swifties who call themselves “Swifties” for Kamala, claimed to have raised a total of $122,000 to support Hariss and Walz. Notably, the pop star’s influence has also bridged the gaps between Music and sports. Just last year, Swift was seen with Donna Kelce, who was wearing her son Travis’ jersey at a Kansas City Chiefs game with the Chicago Bears. After the game, the NFL’s official e-commerce partner for jerseys and other apparel noted that “Travis Kelce was one of the top 5 selling NFL players and saw a nearly 400% spike in sales throughout the Fanatics network of sites, including NFLShop.com” (FOX Business).
One thing is certain, and it’s that Swift’s influence leaves a mark in the sand. However, the majority leaves out individuals who are fans of Swift but remain neutral when it comes to anything other than music. Angela Zhou (10), a student at Yorba Linda High School, expresses her mindset when addressing Swift’s ideals: “I am all Taylor Swift only for her music. I have my own opinions on certain items and groups and I can say she wouldn’t influence me as much around those areas.”
Ms. Phelps (S), a Spanish Teacher at Yorba Linda High School who has been a fan of Swift since her very first album, expressed similar beliefs, saying, “When things are more serious, I will of course listen to what she says, but I will always think about my values first. If I happen to agree, then that’s great, and if not, that’s ok too.”
Overall, Swift has the incredible ability to exert influence, making her contribution to the Harris and Walz campaign favorable. However, the ultimate factors for action upon her influence are an individual’s principles and code of ethics.
