As the VMAs stage lights come alive, all eyes center on a single, striking, red figure – the one and only Lisa. The show has just begun and one thing is for sure; she didn’t come to disappoint.
Lisa kicks off her solo debut performance at the 2024 VMAs with a red two-piece set entwined with intricate details that accentuate her stunning outfit. From the moment she locks eyes with the camera, the stage is all hers. The show starts off with Lisa seated in a red chair in front of a red mirror performing a snippet of her hit single, “New Woman,” which features Spanish singer and songwriter Rosalía. She then flawlessly moves to a new part of the stage where she performs a chair dance routine with black-dressed dancers. As her verse ends, Lisa makes her way to a red catwalk where she smoothly transitions to her chart-topping track, “Rockstar.” She then moves towards the main stage where a silver star prop lies, effortlessly transitioning into the finale of her eye-catching choreography. With the bright lights and the flame-lined stage, the ending of her performance was truly breathtaking, leaving the audience awestruck.
For her solo single, “Rockstar,” Lisa was nominated for four categories: Best Art Direction, Choreography, Editing, and K-Pop. Following her victory with Lisa at the VMAs 2022, Lisa has become the first female solo artist to have won the Best K-pop category twice and the second artist ever to win the Best K-Pop category more than once. As one of the most viewed VMAs 2024 performances on YouTube, the 27-year-old Thai singer and rapper has and continues to reach astounding achievements.
Lisa’s breaking stride in the music industry does not stop at the VMAs. Previously, “Rockstar” had made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart, debuting remarkably at 70, where she made the record as the only female K-Pop solo artist to have the most entries. Not only this, but Lisa also made an impact on Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart and Billboard’s Global 200, where she achieved her first No. 1 and No. 4. In 2024, “Rockstar” was the highest-charting and peaking song released by a K-Pop artist (Billboard). Moreover, she is known for having one of the largest weekly streaming debuts for a K-Pop female act with 39 million streams on Spotify.
After watching Lisa’s VMAs 2024 performance for the first time, with thoughts similarly to the student body at YLHS, Helena Lee (10) shares, “Honestly, I was just left in a state of shock. I truly couldn’t take my eyes off of her. She captivated me so much with her live vocals and stage presence – it was such an experience. Dare I say she devoured the whole stage? I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what more there is to come!” As Lisa continues to break the barriers within the K-pop industry and for female artists, her 2024 VMAs performance truly showcased her incredible talent
