Many people choose to get their information about current events from just one news source; however, by using multiple sources of information, people can become less biased, gain a better understanding of why people believe certain things, and make more informed decisions about their own beliefs on certain topics. Many people choose to get their information about current events from just one news source; however, by using multiple sources of information, people can become less biased, gain a better understanding of why people believe certain things, and make more informed decisions about their own beliefs on certain topics.

Everyone has a way that they prefer to get their news. Some people enjoy reading articles while other people enjoy watching the news on television. People may also have a certain news source that they frequently use to acquire their knowledge on current topics. No matter how information is acquired, it is important that people get their information from a variety of different sources.

It is not new to hear that news sites are often very biased. In fact, it is difficult to find news outlets that are completely free from bias. Many people choose to use news sources that align with their own views, as seen in studies done at Ohio State University. This can become problematic over time because eventually, people begin to assume that their own opinions are right, and they are less willing to try to view topics from a different perspective. If people begin to read articles from different sites that express varying opinions, they can make more informed conclusions on how they truly feel about topics once they have been exposed to multiple perspectives.

According to the New York Times, the two groups of people who are the most biased are people with strong political views and those who claim that they are distrusting of the media; regardless of their stance on the topic, those who distrust the media and those with strong political views showed the most bias when they were instructed to analyze news articles, without knowing the source of the information. People can become less politically biased by reading about opposing opinions so that they can better understand why other people may have opposing opinions. Likewise, people can also be more trusting of the media if they can gather information from a variety of reputable sources.

According to Juliana Neemeh (10), “using multiple sources for news is an important way to make sure that you are getting the most accurate information, and also to make sure that you can make your own educated opinions, free of news bias.” If more people start to use multiple news sources, people can be more understanding of people who have opposing opinions. People will also be able to make their own opinions, using facts from multiple sources. Informed readers challenge their own beliefs by exposing themselves to views that may make them comfortable, in order to better understand their own opinions as well as the people around them.
