Taylor Swift is internationally recognized as one of the most wealthy and famous women in the world at this moment. Knowing the range of her discography, the length of her tour, and the amount of money reported to be going into these shows, it is not a far-off assumption that she has insane amounts of money. Amounts of money that normal people can’t even imagine the scope of. Billionaire money. But unlike a lot of other billionaires, Taylor Swift is severely lacking in terms of her philanthropy. We see a lot of her money publicly being spent on things like private jets but not really on charity. So I wanted to investigate if this was really true.
The first question to ask is, where is all her money coming from? Her massive net worth is a product of both her talents as a musician and songwriter, and also her business-savvy nature; she even created her own management company, in which she acts as CEO. Swift’s income streams include revenue from her concert tour ticket sales, music catalog, streaming deals, and record sales. She also owns multiple high-valued real estate across the U.S. Both Bloomberg and Forbes pin her net worth at an estimated $1.1 billion on the low end, based on analyses of her fortune. She is estimated to have earned $175 million through her contracts with music streamers such as Spotify, Apple Music, and others, the deals make her discography of original songs available to the services’ subscribers.
In terms of what she is doing with the money, it is reported that she gifted over fifty million dollars worth of gifts to her Eras tour staff and in 2023 took over 130 flights on her private jet, it doesn’t seem like the spending of a typical “philanthropist billionaire.” It is also said that she donated about 2 million dollars in aid to her hometown in Tennessee, and while this is very generous it brings around a thought. If she is a billionaire meaning over 1000 million dollars, why is she donating so little, and why on such a small scale? The amount of money and disposable income that Swift has is enough to make a very significant global impact, but she withholds the money seemingly out of greed. I decided to ask avid Taylor fan Sarah Bennani (12) her thoughts on the matter and even with her obvious bias she still commented, “I honestly had this thought not too long ago and agree that she should be doing more, her donation is rare and on a very small scale, when she obviously has the power to do so good and make an impact on the entire world.” This discussion is one that I think should be had regarding a lot of the more famous people in the world, they are given so much money and power, but what are they doing with it?
