Scandal in the Church
April 2, 2019
Recently, an abundance of people have came forward saying that there are people in charge of the Catholic church had sexually abused them. The Catholic church continues facing this growing problem. Most of the abuse cases are happening among the U.S. officials or high officials that run the church.
People say there has to be an update on the rules in the Catholic Church need to be updated, letting the priest marry to someone. Over in Poland, they say almost 400 priest have sexually abused minors. Some people have considered leaving their faith behind due to all the abuse cases coming out. Pope Francis has called for a summit at the Vatican, having all bishops and higher ranked officials show up. He hopes to formally address what actions need to be taken to prevent this from happening again. He also wants to remind the officials of the church what their job is when being committed to God.
Former Cardinal, Theodore McCarrick, had been defrocked for finding him guilty of sexually abusing minors and adults. Cardinal George Pell, had recently been convicted of molestation of two 13 year old boys back in late 1996. Monsignor William Lynn was the first senior official in the U.S. convicted for trying to cover up a sex abuse scandal while working in Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Cardinal Bernard Law, former archbishop of Boston, did not commit any abuse, but was in fact warned about it then would later do nothing to help the victims. He was going to resign his position in 2022, but died in Rome on December 20, 2017, at the age of 68. Pierre De Castelet, a priest in Orleans, France was charged with 2 years after sexually abusing multiple boys at a summer camp in 1993. The church encourages victims to come out and help bring down the officials who have abused them.
Pope Francis has called an all out battle on “sex-abuse”. Over 175 bishops had attended this Vatican summit. He had said that they will be writing a book for all the bishops to know their “duties and task” on abuse. He says that these men have fallen into the evil’s hands, listening to him and following through with sin. Pope Francis said, “The Church’s aim will thus be to hear, watch over, protect and care for abused, exploited and forgotten children, wherever they are.”This conference was from February 21 till February 24. At the end of his summit, he warned the abuser from “the wrath of God”.
The Catholic Church is still currently trying to figure out what they are going to do about the constant appearance of the sex abuse scandal. Pope Francis will soon be assigning more task and actions to take if it continues. A book will come out soon, reminding bishops what their job in the church is on abuse. More cases continue to appear as the year goes on, taking down big officials in the church. “God promises to make something good out of the storms that bring devastation to your life,” Romans 8:28.
