Throughout the school year, ASB or Associated Student Body, can be seen putting on shows of spirit at school events and supporting a wide variety of athletics and arts programs. Starting in March, Yorba Linda High School’s students take part in ASB elections for either executive board or class officer positions.
Why are student campaigns and elections important to include in a high school environment? They allow students more opportunities for leadership and creativity as they often come up with creative campaigns based on musical artists or themes. Not only that, they also allow students to experience America’s democratic process, electing students who they believe embody school ideals and things they want to see incorporated into the school. Therefore, providing high schoolers with wonderful practice for real elections in the future.
Campaigning for a student body position requires a lot of effort. Around the school, students put out flyers and hang posters. Throughout the week, you can see students representing campaigning students by wearing t-shirts for that candidate. It is a wonderful sight to see so many students getting involved at school and this work pays off because of the benefits students get from having elections at their school. Voting 4 Schools, a program that advocates for getting more schools to participate in student elections, points out that school campaigns allow student’s voices to be heard on campus (Voting4Schools.com). They also provide leadership and decision-making skills to students who chose to join in during election week.
Executive Board elections just passed and new president ASB Mylie Brown (11) is very excited to start her presidential term. She has run three times for positions in ASB starting her freshman year and was elected sophomore class president and junior class president. In her opinion the best part of campaigns starts after you get elected, “Although it is fun to campaign and paint posters, my favorite part about running in elections is definitely when the election is OVER! For me personally, that is when things really get exciting and fun as I can start doing the job I ran for!”
Preparing for their election week starting March 25th, candidates for class officer positions are nervously working on their campaigns. Freshman Isabel Cho (9) states that “I am participating in my first ASB election this year! I am very nervous but also excited to campaign and see everyone else’s campaigns. She is planning on making t-shirts and posts for her story to advertise her school campaign.
