Mr. Irrelevant is probably not the title that most people want to be named when being welcomed into the NFL. Nonetheless, such a title somehow creates a sense of admiration within fans that causes them to want to know more.
Two years ago the NFL 49ers welcomed 24-year-old quarterback Brock Purdy during the 2022 NFL Draft… but it all started a little bit less than ideal, he was crowned “Mr. Irrelevant.” Former Iowa State quarterback Purdy was the 262nd overall pick in the 2022 draft, in other words, he was the last pick. Dead last. If that doesn’t make a fan hope the best for him then I’m not sure what would. Despite his awkward circumstances, Purdy quickly made a name for himself by helping his team to the 2024 Super Bowl.
While most 49ers fans were quick to support the rookie, it did not take long for Purdy to be introduced to his fair share of haters. In 2023, Purdy was compared to 25-year-old Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts on the podcast The Herd with Colin Cowherd. Cowherd recognized Hurts’ “professional” and “manicured” presence and then went on to poke fun at Purdy’s “hacky sack” appearance. Brock Purdy was shown in a post-game interview wearing a backward hat, which caused Colin Cowherd to feel compelled to call out this behavior, even though in my opinion, it was unwarranted.
Regardless of the unnecessary negative comments, Purdy continues to prove his haters wrong, such as making it to the Super Bowl. Brock Purdy is such a charismatic and charming guy who can make any football fan want to root for him. 49ers fan and Yorba Linda High School senior, Logan Hannon (12), states, “He’s the most well rounded well-mannered football player of all time”. Purdy has shown his kind and sweet personality as he credits his college coach, saying, “It’s been the story of my life, being overlooked in high school, I wasn’t a high recruit. All I needed was a shot and an opportunity, and Coach Campbell gave it to me at Iowa State, and sure enough, life is repeating itself. I was drafted last, went to the Niners, and got an opportunity.” It’s always nice to see credit where credit is due.
So, if you are looking for a new team to root for, for the next football season, look no further than the San Francisco 49ers. It’s difficult not to root for a team with a sweet underdog like Brock Purdy.
