2017 Grammys Recap
March 2, 2017
Created in 1959 by The Recording Academy, the Grammys have been a Hollywood tradition that recognizes the best talents in the music industry in the past year. Past Grammys aired live primarily on ABC, but was switched to CBS in 1973. On February 11, 2017, the 59th Annual Grammys went underway at the Staples Center. James Corden from the hit talk show, The Late Late Show with James Corden, hosted the awards show. The show was full of many memories and laughs, so a recap is sure in action.
James Corden started the show by falling down the stairs and performing a little number. Adele then sang her #1 hit, “Hello”, which redeemed herself from last year’s performance full of audio issues. Other standout performances were by The Weeknd with Daft Punk who sang “Starboy/I Feel It Coming”, Ed Sheeran singing his new hit “Shape of You”, Beyonce with a medley of songs based around motherhood, Katy Perry who sang “Chained to the Rhythm”, and several other awe-inspiring performances.
The nominees in major categories such as Record of the Year and Album of the Year are some of the best artists of this generation. Winning Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Song of the Year for “Hello”, and Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year for “25”, Adele won the most Grammys out of all the artists the entire night. Other major Grammy awards go to Chance the Rapper as Best New Artist, Twenty One Pilots as Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with “Stressed Out”, The Chainsmokers featuring Daya as Best Dance Recording with “Don’t Let Me Down”, and Beyonce as Best Music Video with “Formation.”
There was some controversy regarding Adele and her Album of the Year award. As she received her award, she praised Beyonce and her album “Lemonade”, which she thought was going to win. An abundant amount of Adele fans bashed on her saying that she should just stand proud that she got the award and not take away from her moment. Some say that the awards show was rigged to make Adele win major categories.
The 59th Annual Grammys had several surprises and drama moments, but at the end of the day, the families at home were thoroughly entertained. When asked her opinion on this year’s Grammys, Maddie Cusick (9) responded, “I thought that the Grammys were super fun to watch and my favorite performance was by Beyonce.” With Adele winning 5 Grammys, Chance the Rapper as Best New Artist, and James Corden falling on the stairs, the 2017 Grammys was one to remember.
