Taylor Swift’s Midnights Album: Review

As a lifelong Taylor Swift fan, I was so excited for Midnights to come out. The hype did not live up to the album though and I personally feel that Midnights was slightly underwhelming, and had only a few tracks I really enjoyed.

The album is 42:02 minutes long, and consists of 13 tracks. Lavender Haze, Maroon, Anti-Hero, Snow on the Beach, You’re on Your Own Kid, Midnight Rain, Question..?, Vigilante S—, Bejeweled, Labyrinth, Karma, Sweet Nothing, and Mastermind. This is Swift’s 10th album released, and she is expected to go on tour in 2023.

Social Media has mixed reviews on the album, and many people either love it or hate it. Giana Mejia (10) says “As a Taylor Swift fan, I was not expecting this style of music, which made it hard to enjoy the first time I listened.”

I agree and disagree with her on many levels. This was not Swift’s normal work, yet it isn’t her worst. Taylor’s album is different and can be seen as unorthodox compared to her other albums such as Speak Now, or 1989. Others really enjoy the album like Rania Sawhney (10) who says “Taylor’s astonishing new album “Midnights” is a beautiful blend of pop and restless nights told using her poetic mind.”

Some songs such as Lavender Haze, Snow on the Beach, and Maroon are really good and show potential. My personal favorite is Snow on the Beach. One thing about the song is that Lana Del Rey is featured in the song, yet has no verses and is just a background singer. I was upset about this because I was excited that Lana Del Rey was featured but did not get a big part in the song. Overall it is still was a good song. Other songs like Karma have had fans waiting for a while. Taylor was about to release an album called Karma, and many were upset it was not released. Karma being released in Midnights is a big deal especially because it was brought back after not being released in 2016.

Many songs are similar to other songs she has written before. The song “Lavender Haze” sounds very similar to “I Think He Knows” (Lover).  “Maroon” sounds similar to “King of My Heart” (Reputation).

In addition to releasing the album Midnights, Swift also released an addition to it, Midnights: 3am version, to her fans. This included 7 more tracks. She released The Great War, Bigger Than The Whole Sky, Paris, High Indefiledity, Glitch, Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, and Dear Reader.

Many people are rushing to places like Target for the lavender vinyl record of Midnights. It has 3 bonus tracks added to it. The album itself has many interesting parts to it, the background and history to it, and how it tells the story of 13 sleepless nights throughout Taylor’s life. Cannot wait to see what she has planned for us next!
