Even here at Yorba Linda High School, students have different handwriting styles, and each one tells something different about everyone.
Large Handwriting: An Outgoing Leader
Big handwriting usually means that someone is confident, outgoing, and likes to stand out in a crowd. Many leaders, entertainers, or people who like to be the center of attention tend to write like this. Their big, bold letters reflect their personalities. They’re the type of people who are never afraid to speak up, as writing big can be a sign that they want to be noticed and remembered.
Small Handwriting: A Detail-Oriented Thinker
Sophomore Kaitlyn Joe explains, “Small handwriting helps me stay neat. I like things in order.” Small handwriting often shows that someone is focused, careful, and maybe even a little more introverted. These writers usually pay attention to little details and want everything to be “perfect.” Many hardworking students tend to write this way because it takes patience and concentration to keep letters small and precise.
Rounded Letters: A Friendly Optimist
Rounded handwriting usually means someone is friendly, creative, and has a happy, approachable personality. People who write with round letters are often friendly and easy to talk to. They tend to be friends who make you feel comfortable and listened to. Rounded writing can also show creativity or imagination. I have round handwriting, and I can say that these descriptions reflect my personality!
Sharp Writing: An Intense Achiever
Sharp handwriting with angles often belongs to determined students who tend to set high goals for themselves. It can also suggest a critical thinker or a very task-oriented and focused person. These writers use sharp angles and edges in their letters, which might reflect how they’re always pushing themselves to do better and think harder. Their handwriting shows their intensity and drive, and sometimes even a bit of impatience or seriousness.
Connected Cursive: A Logical Planner
“I’ve been writing in cursive since elementary school,” says Morgan Spillane (10). “It’s faster, and I like how everything flows.” Students with connected, cursive-style writing are often logical and methodical thinkers. They like structure and order, not just in their writing but in how they organize their day and tackle problems. Their flowing letters might show how they like things to connect smoothly, without interruptions, whether it’s in their notes or in their lives.

“My writing always leans to the right, and I do it all the time without even realizing,” says Kara Kim (9). Right-slanted handwriting is usually a sign of someone who’s expressive and quick to connect with others. Additionally, it can also indicate energy and enthusiasm. On the other hand, leftward slants often belong to more introverted or cautious personalities. Writers with left slants might be more private and prefer to think things over before sharing their feelings.
Straight Up: Calm and Controlled
Writing that stands straight up, with vertical letters, usually belongs to people who are balanced and emotionally controlled. These writers often stay calm and level-headed, even when things get stressful. Their handwriting reflects how they try to keep everything steady, organized, and controlled.
Messy and Rushed: A Creative Mind
“My notes are wild,” laughs Andre Herrada (10). “But I swear I know what they mean, even though my teachers always complain that they can’t read it.” While messy handwriting can sometimes be misunderstood, it surprisingly represents creativity, intelligence, and quick thinking. It may reflect a student constantly coming up with new ideas, sometimes faster than they can write them down. Their messy style shows their mind is moving so fast that neatness can’t keep up.
Essentially, our personality doesn’t have to match our handwriting completely. Other factors influence the way you write, such as whether you’re right- or left-handed. However, for some people, writing can reflect their personality and mindset. So next time you write yourself a reminder on a sticky note or jot down your homework, think about what your handwriting might be saying about you!
