Just a mere week ago on October 3rd 2022, North Korea launched a missile over the Japanese archipelago and into the Pacific Ocean, barely missing Japan. The North Korean government claimed this to be a practice attack, which they planned on unleashing on South Korea. This has sparked alarm throughout many countries, for North Korea is now being seen as a potential threat.
North Korea, also commonly referred to as the “Hermit Kingdom,” has been regarded as a threat for a long time. It was widely believed that due to North Korea’s poor economy, lack of money, and corrupt government, an attack was unlikely. However, it has been proven otherwise.
Although North Korea is one of the most unstable countries in the world, their nuclear artillery is no joke. The country’s money is often spent on nuclear weapons and the leader, Kim Jong-un, instead of the people. Due to this, many North Korean citizens live below the poverty line and often starve to death. With all of the country’s money being spent on weaponry, it is inevitable that North Korea could possibly be a threat to many other countries aside from neighboring ones like Japan. After five years of dormant activity from the country, North Korea certainly shocked the world when the missile was fired. Since the launch, the South Korean and US governments have been discussing North Korea’s possible and future attacks and the danger they pose. “US and South Korea intelligence officials have been suggesting that the North may be a potential threat to nearby countries.” (BBC News)

Once news of the missile had reached Japan, Japanese citizens were ordered to take shelter and stay alert for any chance of another attack. The news left citizens panicking and fearing for their safety, while the Japanese government tried to resolve the problem. South Korea is in a similar state, for rumors of another attack have been circulating for the past few days. It has also been said that the US is another potential target. In response to this, Sambhav Puri (9) says, “It’s scary, knowing that we could be targeted by them. I remember people speculating about North Korea attacking the US back in 2020.”
After what we have seen with Japan, it is possible that another attack may occur. Many countries are at stake, especially South Korea and the US. With today’s technology and weaponry, war would result in more mass destruction than it has in the past.
