The date of Friday, November 30, 2018, marks a significant and historic day for the United States of America. At the age of 94, former President George H. W. Bush passed away. His funeral services began on Monday, December 3, 2018, on Ellington Field in Houston, Texas. As his casket was put on Special Air Mission 41, family, friends, and his dog Sully was there to witness. Sully was Bush’s service dog who accompanied him when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The dog opened doors, pressed emergency buttons, and brought objects, forming their close relationship. After that, his casket was taken to Joint Base Andrews and then flown to the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

Two days later, on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, his official funeral occurred at the Washington National Cathedral where many people attended his memorial including former President Obama and President Trump. His son, former US President, George W. Bush also gave a heartwarming speech that brought many to tears.

The next day Mr. Bush was transported by train to the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas where he was then buried. Mr. Bush was placed next to his wife, Barbara Bush, who had died in April, as well as his daughter Pauline Robinson Bush, who died at the age of 3 in 1953.

As citizens or residents of the United States, it is our duty to honor someone as important to this country as President Bush, no matter what political opinion one has. President Trump as well as former President Obama both did their duty in honoring Mr. Bush after he passed away. For example, Mr. Trump stated how, through “ his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service. Through all that he accomplished, he remained humble, following the quiet call to service that gave him a clear sense of direction.” Additionally, Mr. Obama mentioned how America “has lost a patriot and humble servant in George Herbert Walker Bush. While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude. Our thoughts are with the entire Bush family tonight – and all who were inspired by George and Barbara’s example.”

After discussing with friends about Mr. Bush’s death, Safia Khan (12) mentioned how cute his dog, Sully, was as he “was included throughout many of the funeral services.” Clearly, President George H.W. Bush had a great impact on this country. Many felt great loss once he passed away. Hearing what others had to say about him was quite heartwarming.
